Teaching British Values

Teaching British Values at St Thomas More Catholic Primary School

The Government first outlined British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy and provided guidance for schools in Promoting Fundamental British Values as Part of SMSC in Schools (2014). All schools are expected to actively promote these values, which include:

  • Democracy – understanding how citizens can have a voice in decision-making.

  • Rule of Law – recognising the importance of laws in society and the responsibilities that come with them.

  • Individual Liberty – understanding personal freedoms and making safe, informed choices.

  • Mutual Respect – valuing and treating others with respect.

  • Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs – appreciating diversity and understanding different perspectives.

At St Thomas More, these values are fully embedded in our school ethos, PSHCE programme, and across the wider curriculum. They are reinforced in everyday school life, through lessons, activities, and discussions, helping children understand their role in a diverse society.

We also have a dedicated display board highlighting British values, which is referenced during Collective Worship to help children reflect on and apply these principles in their daily lives.
