Religious Education

Religious Education is the "core of the core curriculum" in a Catholic school (Pope St John Paul II). Placing RE at the core of the curriculum in Catholic schools helps the school to fulfil its mission to educate the whole person in discerning the meaning of their existence, since "Religious Education is concerned not only with intellectual knowledge, but also includes emotional and affective learning. It is in the mystery of the Word made flesh that the mystery of what it is to be human truly becomes clear." (CES)

In a Catholic school, children participate in the statutory minimum of 10% of curriculum time dedicated solely to the teaching of RE as a unique subject discipline. In addition, they will have a planned programme of liturgy and prayer, alongside special RE-themed days and key weeks (such as Holy Week). We follow the Religious Education programme from the Birmingham Diocesan Catholic Schools Commission – 'Learning and Growing as People of God.'

The strategy enables children to explore the beliefs, values and way of life in the Catholic tradition. Through this programme we familiarise the children with the Gospel message.   We also consider wider Christian issues and learn about other religious traditions.
