Autumn Term 1 Learning

English:
Year 2 will be using The Secret of Black Rock by Joe Todd-Stanton as the focus for our learning. The children will write a range of exciting texts, including a descriptive piece about the fascinating sea creatures discovered on the Black Rock and a persuasive leaflet encouraging people to visit
the seaside. Throughout the unit, children will apply the grammar and writing skills they have previously learned to produce high-quality writing. To celebrate National Poetry Day, the class will also work together to write and perform a poem for the rest of the school.
Maths:
In Maths, the children will focus on developing their understanding of numbers to 100, as well as addition and subtraction within 20. Alongside these lessons,they will continue to take part in our daily Mastering Number sessions, helping to build confidence, fluency and a deeper understanding of number.
RE:
Year 2 will explore the importance of the Bible and why it is significant to the Church and to Christians. The children will deepen their understanding of the concept of covenant, consider how our actions have consequences, and learn about good stewardship, exploring how caring for God's word helps to restore
and strengthen relationships.
P.E Days in Year 2:
Our P.E days are Tuesdays and Fridays. Therefore, on both of these days children should come into school wearing their full St. Thomas More P.E kit. Please ensure they have a navy P.E uniform and appropriate footwear. Earrings will need to be removed for both of these days.
Reading:
Please listen to your child read aloud at home daily and ensure that children have logged their reading into their pageticker account, we check it daily to ensure reading is taking place at home. This allows us to change reading books accordingly. Ask them questions about what they have read and encourage them
to retell a story to improve their understanding of a range of texts. Lots of Year2 reading suggestions are found on the pageticker app.

Phonics and Spellings:
This Term we will recap Phase 5 sounds, before moving onto our Year 2 spelling programme. This five-week Phase 5 review ensures the children have secured the trickier parts of Phase 5 and can apply this alphabetic knowledge both to read and spell. Children will be given their spellings every Monday to practice at home for Friday spelling test.

KS1 Optional Tests
If you have a child in year 2, at the end of key stage 1 (KS1) they may take part
in national curriculum tests in:
English reading
English grammar, punctuation and spelling
mathematics
The tests are not mandatory for schools to administer at the end of KS1, but your child’s school may choose to use them to help identify where pupils need additional support as they transition into key stage 2 (KS2).

Should you need to be in touch, all communication should generally be made through the school office email. However, we are also happy to receive a note from you if a child is unable to do PE or requires support with their homework.
